Far Easedale Fells

My brief for this guided walk was " Somewhere away from gobs of people, with a bit of a scramble"

My client Tammy was based in Grasmere for a few days whilst on vacation from Las Vegas. After a quick look at the map, I chose the Far Easedale fells for our route. The weather forecast was good for the day, which was ideal for the little surprise I had in store for the walk. We set off from Grasmere and the hustle and bustle of the village (not quite Las Vegas bustle, but busy non the less!), and soon began the ascent of Sourmilk Gill towards Easedale Tarn.

Easedale Tarn

Although the weather was hot and sticky at this point, we somehow managed to refrain from a swim in the tarn! After a quick rest here it was onwards and upwards (or downwards in this case) as we headed for Easedale Valley for a touch of peace and solitude.

Easedale Valley

After a long walk through the valley and through much sheep poop!, we went off path a little to explore the local flora. You only need to go a few metres from the paths to find some wonderful flowers.

Once on the high ground of Calf Crag the views really began to open up before us, reaching all the way back to the North Pennines! It was the view in the foreground of Easedale Valley and Grasmere that really caught the eye though!

Views for days

Grasmere and Loughrigg Fell in the distance

We continued our high level walk along the broad ridgeline of Calf Crag, Pike of Carrs and Gibson Knott, before our piece de resistance came into view. Looking over to Helm Crag from Gibson Knott is one of the finest views in all of Lakeland! The sheer Greenness (is that a word?) is simply breathtaking!

Helm Crag looms

We were soon on our last fell of the day, and what a fell it is! Standing at only 405 metres it profile leads you into thinking it is much higher. Viewed from the below, the distinctive rock shapes that give this fell its nickname (The lion & The Lamb) are quite obvious to see. From the summit it is not so obvious...

The Lion & The Lamb

Tammy has done a lot of scrambling and canyoning in the USA and i had a feeling she would enjoy the small climb to the summit of Helm Crag. I was not wrong!

The Howitzer on Helm Crag

With the excitement of the scramble behind us it was time to descend back down to the village of Grasmere below. But even this is a joy with the views it offers

Descending Helm Crag

I hope that when Tammy returns home from her vacation and the hustle and bustle of city life gets a little too much, that she can perhaps close her eyes and be transported back to the peace and quiet of these lush green fells? She might even miss the sheep poop

Thank you for hiring our services Tammy, hope to see you again when you return to England.
